Forty junior secondary students from Cessnock and Newcastle participated in a hands-on workshop with some of our leading geoscientists at Science in the City, Newcastle this month.

Petrologist Carol Simpson led the students in an activity which examined the origin, formation and mineral composition of rocks within a drill core sample. Employing petrological techniques students examined thin sections of rock using microscopes and were then able to identify rock types and talk about the environment in which they were formed.

Each year Industry & Investment NSW staff support Science in the City, Science in the Suburbs and Science in the Bush events across NSW. Access to specialist scientists is an experience highly valued by schools.

Science in the City, Suburbs and Bush are science education events for schools run by the Australian Museum and the University of Sydney with funding provided by the Australian Government.

More information about Science in the City and other events for schools can be found at www.scienceinthecity.net.
