Mines safety legislation (metalliferous, extractives and opal mines)
New safety legislation for mines
The Mine Health and Safety Act 2004 and Mine Health and Safety Regulation 2007 were proclaimed on 21 December 2007. The legislation is intended to protect the health, safety and welfare of people working in the NSW metalliferous, extractive and opal mining industries.
To afford industry time to ready itself for compliance with the new laws, the new duties under the Mine Health and Safety Act 2004 and Mine Health and Safety Regulation 2007 will come into force on 1 September 2008. The new legislation will replace the Mines Inspection Act 1901 and Mines Inspection General Rule 2000, which remain in force until 1 September 2008.
