Safety Awareness Course
Before being able to hold a mineral claim, the Safety Awareness Course must be completed.
The course is essentially a general safety course, and covers many issues including:
- Claim Markout
- Mine Establishment
- Roof Failure
- Legislation
- Types of Roof Support
- Mine Environment
- Electrical Installations
- Ventilation of Mines
- Underground Surveying
- Mine Planning
Further reference material regarding safety can be found in the Lightning Ridge Opal Mining Safety Guidelines publication (Ordering Information), which can be obtained at the department's Lightning Ridge and Maitland offices.

All Mine Safety Awareness Courses will be held at the Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club. Please note there is no smoking permitted in the classroom. This is also an alcohol free event.
Environmental Awareness Course
Before being able to hold a mineral claim in Opal Prospecting Area 4, the Environmental Awareness Course must also be completed in addition to the Safety Awareness.
The course gives an overview on how to minimise damage to the environment whilst conducting exploration and mining activities, and covers many issues including:
- Impacts on flora & fauna
- Prevention of soil erosion
- Subsidence impacts
- Mullock management
- Aboriginal or historic sites
- Puddling operations

Mine Operator's Workshop
In addition to the Safety Awareness Course, the Mine Operators Course is also available to anyone wishing to become a Mine Operator. Subjects covered in the course will include:
- Safety Policy
- Hazard Identification
- Maintenance
- Risk Management
- People Management
- Emergency Response Plan
- Contractors
Booking are required to attend the above Mining Courses. Applications for the courses must be lodged prior to the course date, and lodged at the department's Lightning Ridge Office.
