Mine Safety

NSW Mine Safety Technology Centre

Specialist technical services are provided at the new Mine Safety Technology Centre at Thornton.

The Mine Safety Technology Centre is staffed by specialised mine safety scientists and engineers, providing testing and research projects, as well as training. The role of the Mine Safety Technology Centre is pivotal in ensuring that the highest standards of mine safety are set and maintained for mines in NSW. The main areas of work at this facility comprise:

  • analytical services
  • occupational hygiene
  • equipment certification
  • intrinsic safety evaluations on electrical equipment used in underground mining.

Mobile gas analysis laboratories also operate from the centre, where they are well placed for any emergency call-out to mine sites. The mobile laboratory makes it possible to analyse samples directly from the engine and, if necessary, suggest adjustments and then retest the engine.
