Overview of NSW Centre for Tropical Horticulture, Alstonville

NSW Centre for Tropical Horticulture (CTH) is recognised by the horticultural industry and associated research bodies as a centre for the delivery of horticultural research, development and extension services.

In total, the Centre maintains 24 staff including:

  • technical officers, technical assistants, and operational staff;
  • regulatory officers and staff who deal directly with industry;
  • and six research staff - a soil health scientist, a senior research scientist, research horticulturist, a plant physiologist in sub tropical fruit, and an entomologist who each have funded projects on important industry issues.

The research groups include plant physiology/nutrition, plant physiology in subtropical crops, research horticulture (canopy management), entomology, and, soil science.

The centre is located in Alstonville, on the Bruxner Highway, overlooking the town of Ballina on the far north coast of NSW.

A major tree-planting program to link together isolated sections of trees was initiated at CTH. It aims to enhance the rainforest remnant known as the "Big Scrub".
