Objectives of the Centre for Recycled Organics in Agriculture

The objectives of CROA are to:

  • Develop options for beneficially reusing products made from recycled organics (RO) and other recovered materials in agriculture.
  • Build community confidence in the beneficial reuse of recovered resources;
  • Make better informed regulatory decisions based on independent scientific data;
  • Protect agricultural markets and agricultural product safety; and
  • Act as a resource for providing technical and policy advice to both regulators and industry.
  • Undertake collaborative projects, which:
  • assess and develop new products,
  • examine critical soil and environmental criteria,
  • produce best practice guidelines and
  • develop extension programs for beneficially reusing recovered resources.

To achieve these objectives CROA:

  • Independently assesses the suitability of RO/industrial residuals for land application.
  • Provides a research & development resource for long-term, replicated field trials to establish the full benefit of RO application to land.
  • Develops best management practices and rapid screening tests for the use of RO/industrial materials in agriculture and land remediation.
  • Develops and validate best practice guidelines.
  • Develops and assess value-added blends and products for specific end purposes.
  • Provides a focus for awareness and education in industry and community through education and extension programs.
  • Provides opportunities for postgraduate research.
  • Publishes and disseminates research findings in the public domain.

Outcomes will include improving the regulatory environment for RO use, increasing protection of catchment health through more effective erosion and run-off control and greater confidence by the community in the use of recycled organics in agriculture.
