Advisory services of Deniliquin Agricultural Research and Advisory Station
Deniliquin’s extension officers provide reliable and independent farm management advice as they disseminate the results of practical, science-based research in cropping, pastures, sheep and wool production, irrigation, soils and salinity. In addition to answering individual inquiries and providing access to printed materials, extension officers also conduct field days, farm walks, seminars and discussion groups.
District Agronomists
Two District Agronomists are based at the Deniliquin Agricultural Research and Advisory Station and provide advisory support to farmers in the Deniliquin and Barham/Wakool areas. Rice discussion groups were initiated in 1985–86 and continue to be an effective extension tool, encouraging farmer interaction, awareness, and adoption of recommended management practices. Farmers are also advised on varietal evaluation, cropping practices, irrigation scheduling and disease control recommendations for winter cereals, canola, legumes and pastures.
Livestock Officer — Sheep and Wool
Flock health and coordination of the State Ectoparasite Control Program is a major commitment of the Sheep and Wool Livestock Officer. Considerable attention is also paid to Merino breeding and management programs and to wool and sheepmeat industry liaison, accreditation and training. Product quality, price and profitability are underlying considerations of sustainable wool and sheepmeat businesses.
Irrigation Officer
Improving the efficiency and productivity of Murray Valley irrigators and reducing the adverse environmental impacts of inefficient irrigation are dual responsibilities of the Irrigation Officer. Strong networks are maintained with Land and Water Management Plan areas and private irrigation schemes. Training programs are provided and assistance is given regarding planning and funding applications.
Irrigated Soils Advisory Officer
Many winter-cropping soils are sodic or are developing soil acidity. Advice, based on field trials and demonstrations, is offered to enable management and amelioration of these conditions. Training programs are regularly conducted. Close liaison is maintained with organisations involved in Land and Water Management Plans, water use efficiency, and irrigation management.
