Port Stephens Fisheries Institute from the air

The Institute covers an area of about 50 acres and includes a wide range of buildings to meet the needs of all activities on the site.  The Port Stephens Fisheries Institute has extensive facilities for research and accommodates administration/management and compliance staff.

  • Don Francois Building – accommodates around 35 staff 
  • Don Francois Conference and/or meeting rooms 
  • Mollusc hatchery – aquaculture research and laboratory building 
  • Quarantine Mollusc hatchery – aquaculture research and laboratory building
  • Marine fish hatchery – aquaculture research and laboratory building 
  • Marine fish broodstock hatchery – aquaculture research and laboratory building 
  • Marine fish nursery facilities and grow-out tanks – aquaculture research
  • Bass hatchery – aquaculture research building 
  • Aquatic Ecosystems Building – accommodates around 30 research staff 
  • Aquatic Ecosystem Laboratory - specialised for shark research
  • New building - accommodates Aquatic Biosecurity staff and Fisheries Officers
  • Boatshed and boat ramp 
  • Library – provides information sources for research 
  • Greenhouse – aquaculture research 
  • Outdoor ponds – aquaculture research 
  • Visitors Centre – now used as office space for a small number of staff 
  • Bunkhouse – shared accommodation used mainly by work experience students 
  • Workshop and Garage area – the site has 2 workshop staff
