Hydrological function and sediment delivery from headwater drainage lines

Summary

Flat-v weir and water sampling equipment on an unmapped drainage line in Kendall State forest, Mid-North Coast NSW

Flat-v weir and water sampling equipment on an unmapped drainage line in Kendall State forest, Mid-North Coast NSW

The headwater drainage line project is conducted in small catchments (<5ha) within native forests. The project was initiated in 2001 to address knowledge gaps in our understanding of the hydrological function of, and sediment transport processes within, small catchments.

Project Objectives

The headwater drainage line project aims to determine the processes, frequency and magnitude of runoff within very small catchments with unmapped drainage lines. Sediment erosion, transport and deposition within such catchments are also being examined. This will guide best management practices for harvesting forests in headwater landscapes and ensure adequate protection of riparian zones and water quality.
