Bernie Dominiak
Project Coordinator Special Surveillance Projects
Animal and Plant Biosecurity
Plant BioSecurity Risk Management

Research interests

  • Sterile Insect Technique
  • Mass rearing sterile fruit flies
  • Management of fruit flies
  • Exotic plant pest surveillance
  • Trade related surveillance
  • Analysis of zero detections in surveillance programs

Background

Bernie Dominiak coordinates many fruit fly and surveillance activities and is based in Head Office. He originally joined the Department in 1977 and has over 20 years experience with pest management and surveillance.

He is responsible for the Queensland Fruit Fly Production Facility at EMAI and worked in field release techniques for sterile fruit flies in the late 1990s. He has daily reporting responsibilities for detections of fruit flies affecting trade from the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone. Bernie has also coordinated surveillance programs for pests such as Red Imported Fire Ants, Asian Gypsy Moths, Small Hive Beetle, Sycamore Lace Bug and other significant exotic plant pests. He is involved with development of hand held devices for surveillance and data bases for storage of surveillance information.

*NSW Department of Primary Industries was formed on July 1, 2004 through an amalgamation of NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests of NSW and the NSW Department of Mineral Resources.

Qualifications

B.Appl.Sc. (Rural Technology) 1972

Current projects

  • Reviewing the science associated with mass production of Queensland fruit fly
  • Improvement of scientific reporting to support trade access discussions
  • Centralisation of surveillance data
  • Statistical analysis of surveillance data made up mainly of nil detections for international reinstatement purposes
  • Improved lures for fruit fly surveillance
