Joanne Holloway
Research Entomologist
Plant Entomology

Research interests

  • Stored grain insects
  • Insecticide resistance
  • Phosphine fumigation protocols
  • IPM in field crops
  • Beneficial invertebrates
  • Biological control

Background

Joanne Holloway is the research entomologist for field crops in southern NSW. She is also the leader of the Stored Grain Research Unit at Wagga Wagga.

After completion of her PhD, studying the ecophysiology of sugar gliders, Joanne was employed as a Professional Officer at the University of NSW. Research during this time involved investigating adaptations of a wide range of native animals, from red kangaroos to Christmas Island crabs, to the environment.

Joanne joined NSW Agriculture (now NSW DPI) at Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute in 2002 as a Research Entomologist. Since then her research has focussed on the identification and management strategies to avoid chemical resistance in stored grain insects, and integrated pest management of insects in broadacre field crops.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) – University of New England 1992
  • PhD Zoology – University of New England 1999

Current projects

  • National program for monitoring resistance to phosphine in insect pests of stored grain
  • Fumigation protocols to control strong resistant flat grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens)
  • Resistance management of stored grain insects in the southern region
  • Assessment of IPM strategies to control insects in rotational farming systems of the southern region
  • Phosphine fumigation of cool grain
  • Floor management systems to reduce vineyard inputs and improve grape quality
