John GOLDING

Research Horticulturist - Post Harvest
Plant Entomology

Research interests

  • Postharvest horticulture
  • Management of fruit ripening
  • Maintenance and improvement of all facets of quality during storage
  • Interaction of pre- and postharvest storage environment
  • Green tea

Background

John works with the postharvest / market access team based at the Gosford Horticultural Institute. He works on the maintenance of quality during storage of a range of fruit and vegetable crops for the domestic and overseas market. John works predominantly with temperate fruits such as summerfruit, cherries and apples and new crops (such as mild onions and green tea). He has a number of collaborative horticultural industry projects to improve the market access and postharvest storage quality. John is also a Conjoint Lecturer with the University of Newcastle.

Qualifications

  • B.Agric.Sc. (Hons) – Adelaide University
  • PhD Postharvest Physiology – University of Western Sydney

Current projects

  • Assessment of an alternative ‘non-chemical’ summerfruit disinfestation procedure
  • Scoping study to identify and quantify factors to improve summerfruit quality and consistency
  • Assessment of an alternative ‘non-chemical’ cherry disinfestation procedure
  • Production of high quality export green tea through integrated management
  • Preliminary field survey of Australian mild onions
  • New shipping technology for Australian vegetables
  • Understanding fruit physiology to minimise low temperature disorders of summerfruit
