Background

Patrick Staples graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 1978 and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree from Massey University, New Zealand, in 1984. After a stint in veterinary practice in New Zealand, he studied veterinary pathology at the University of Melbourne, receiving a Master of Veterinary Studies (Pathology) in 1990. Since 1990, Patrick has worked as a diagnostic veterinary pathologist in New Zealand and Australia. He attained Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (MACVSc) in the field of Pathology by examination in 2000. Patrick joined the NSW Department of Primary Industries in 1999 as a veterinary pathologist at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Orange, where he worked for 10 years. Patrick has worked at the State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory since 2010, spending time between Orange and the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, Menangle. Patrick is involved in diagnostic veterinary pathology across a wide range of species and currently has a special interest in diseases of farmed livestock, particularly sheep, cattle and alpacas. He also has a special interest in veterinary informatics and the use of databases for animal disease analysis.
