Russell REINKE
Research interests
- Rice breeding and agronomy
- Rice physiology
- Rice grain quality
- Molecular markers
Background
Russell Reinke, in conjunction with Dr Peter Snell, runs the Rice Breeding Program at Yanco Agricultural Institute. Dr Reinke commenced at Yanco in 1986. A total of 16 rice varieties of diverse grain quality and increased yield potential have been released from the Rice Breeding Program since 1987. The trend has been diversification away from the standard medium-grain and long-grain types to incorporation of specific quality characteristics including fragrant rices, high-amylose or firm-cooking long-grains, arborio types (favoured for risotto and paella dishes) and soft-cooking short-grains for the Japanese market. Although these specialty varieties account for a relatively small area of production, they have nonetheless been significant in adding to overall profitability and market presence for Australian rice growers.
