Background
Peter Kirkland heads the NSW Department of Primary Industries’ specialist Veterinary Virology Laboratory at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI), Camden. He is responsible for the management of the laboratory’s diagnostic, health certification and research functions. The laboratory undertakes testing for a wide range of viruses of production livestock, aquatic species and wildlife. It also undertakes industry funded research into important viral diseases of farm animals, wildlife and fish as well as undertaking contract research for private organisations.
Dr Kirkland joined NSW Agriculture* in 1974 as a field veterinary officer and moved to his laboratory role after completing postgraduate studies in veterinary virology in 1985. He has more than 20 years experience in the development of rapid diagnostic assays, vaccine development and evaluation and research in many other aspects of veterinary virology and animal health. He has special interests in infections with pestiviruses, bluetongue and other important vector borne viruses of animals. He is the designated OIE Expert for bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) in the Virology Laboratory which is an OIE (World) Reference Laboratory for BVDV.
*NSW Department of Primary Industries was formed on July 1, 2004 through an amalgamation of NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests of NSW and the NSW Department of Mineral Resources.
