Virtually farming diaries

This page is no longer current. It was used for the Virtually farming pilot project.

For more information, see: Virtually farming pilot project report.

Virtually farming is a pilot project to test the concept of 'on-line' work experience for Year 10 students with women who work in primary industries.

The 'work experience' will take place 28 July - 1 August 2008.

On Monday - Thursday during the project, the women will keep an on-line diary. Students will ask questions to learn about the women's jobs and day-to-day activities.

The diaries are accessed at the links below. Access is restricted to the project participants.

A report on the project will be published on the RWN website at the conclusion of the project.

Background

On-line work experience in primary industries was selected as the theme for the pilot project in response to the following reports:

  • A recent study by the Australian Council of Deans of Agriculture showed the supply of agriculture graduates is falling behind the demand for such graduates: Communiqué (3 April 2008)
  • A pre-summit submission to the Future directions for rural industries and communities stream at the 2020 Summit that proposed urban-rural exchanges to improve urban understanding of rural life and encourage more students to take up agricultural studies: Initial Summit Report, page 21 (April 2008)

Since then, the Australian Farm Journal has run an article with a similar theme:

  • Agricultural image in dire need of a makeover (3 July 2008)
