https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7mhxMRzX_g [00:00:03] When starting work [00:00:05] on a new orchard, you will meet the harvest supervisor, you will be introduced [00:00:10] to the orchard and provided with important information. The induction manual provides [00:00:15] you with information about the rules picking requirements and safety [00:00:20] aspects of the orchard. You will also be explained such things as where [00:00:25] to park your car. Speed limits, the location of toilets. You [00:00:30] will be provided with the Citrus Harvest Handbook, which outlines all of the information [00:00:35] presented in these videos and any other information that will make your work more [00:00:40] successful and safer. Do not use tractors [00:00:45] or machinery unless you are authorized to do so. Training [00:00:55] will involve a demonstration and assessment on the correct and [00:01:00] safe use of the tractor or machine. Do [00:01:05] not ride on bin trailers, do not ride [00:01:10] in bin trailers. Do not consume alcohol [00:01:15] at the farm. Do not leave rubbish in the orchard. [00:01:20] Take all of your rubbish out of the orchard, do not [00:01:25] place personal items beside the bin, your items are at risk [00:01:30] of being damaged by machinery. Put your personal items [00:01:35] in a safe place. Do not bring children onto [00:01:40] the farm. You need to be properly [00:01:45] dressed and have the appropriate equipment for safe and efficient harvest work, [00:01:50] apply sunscreen to all parts of the exposed body, wear [00:01:55] a hat and safety glasses. Flexible armed glasses [00:02:00] are often more comfortable than stiff armed glasses. Wear [00:02:05] a long sleeved shirt with strong weave fabric, a [00:02:10] high visibility shirt is safer around machinery. Use a fruit [00:02:15] picking bag, select a bag suitable to your safe carrying capacity. [00:02:20] Mandarins are sometimes picked into special rigid padded [00:02:25] bags wear soft fabric gloves. Replace the [00:02:30] gloves when broken or too dirty. [00:02:35] Damaged fruit can be on the tree, pick this fruit, but do not [00:02:40] put it in the bag. Throw this fruit away, throw away all fruit that [00:02:45] are split or diseased. Do not pick in the rain [00:02:50] or fruit are wet from the rain or morning dew only pick the trees [00:02:55] once fruit and leaves are dry. If you see a fruit with a stem break [00:03:00] off the stem before putting it in the bag, do not throw the fruit into the bag. [00:03:05] Bring your hand down to the bag and place it into the bag. [00:03:10] Do not pick up any fruit that have fallen onto the ground. Do [00:03:15] not pick fruit into buckets. The harvest supervisor will [00:03:20] not let you start picking in the morning until the air temperature is about 12 degrees [00:03:25] centigrade. You will also not be able to peak in summer if it gets too [00:03:30] hot. Do not overfill picking bags, fill [00:03:35] it with fruit level to the top of the bag, do not place a ladder [00:03:40] on trees with fruit remaining on the lower parts of the canopy. First [00:03:45] pick the lower parts of the canopy. And then use the ladder [00:03:50] to pick the upper part of the canopy at the end of the day, shake [00:03:55] out the bag to remove any leaves, twigs or insects that may have [00:04:00] fallen into the bag. To unload fruit, hang the bag over the bin, hold [00:04:05] the side of the bin as this will help to support your back as you lower the bag, [00:04:10] lower the bag, use your arms to carry most of the weight, unhook [00:04:15] the straps and slowly lift the bag to gently release the fruit into the [00:04:20] bin. [00:04:22] Do not drop the fruit into the bin, always [00:04:25] lower the bag into the bin before unloading. Do not put [00:04:30] the bag on the side of the bin. Always hang the bag directly into the bin, ready [00:04:35] to be lowered. After unloading the fruit, check the fruit and remove [00:04:40] stems from any fruit. Do not use [00:04:45] bins that have any dirt or debris, clean the bin out with a rag [00:04:50] or brush until clean. Do not underfill bins [00:04:55] with fruit. You might be asked to [00:05:00] fill the bin, probably wasting your valuable picking time. Fill bin [00:05:05] level to the top. You [00:05:10] can move a by rotating it on its side to [00:05:15] do this first, lift the side of the bin by bending the knees and keeping the back [00:05:20] straight, lift the bin onto its side, then twist the bin around. [00:05:25] And roll it to its new position. [00:05:30] Mandarins are harvested [00:05:35] by keeping fruit with special snips. There are different kinds of snips [00:05:40] see the separate video or the Citrus Harvest Handbook? For more information [00:05:45] to clip the fruit lightly lay the snips on top of the fruit at the [00:05:50] base of the stem and snipped the fruit, snip the fruit as low as [00:05:55] possible to the base of the stem. Do not leave high stems. [00:06:00] High stems will damage and puncture other fruit. Trim [00:06:05] off stems that are too high. Be careful not to scrape or cut fruit [00:06:10] with the snips, do not cut bunches of fruit down as this can damage [00:06:15] next season's fruiting wood. [00:06:18] Do not pull fruit down. This [00:06:20] can damage the top of the fruit. Use a ladder to pick high fruit. [00:06:25] Double clipping is used to pick mandarins not in close range or [00:06:30] on some orchards it is a requirement for snipping all fruit. Snip [00:06:35] the fruit at an easily accessible spot about two to 10 centimeters above [00:06:40] the fruit. Bring the fruit closer to yourself, then snip the fruit. On [00:06:45] some orchard's mandarin picking bins might be covered with [00:06:50] a cloth to protect them from sun and heat damage. Do [00:06:55] not throw mandarins into picking bags, always place [00:07:00] the fruit into bags. To [00:07:05] carry a ladder, place one hand at the shoulder height rung and the other [00:07:10] hand at the hip height rung lift and move the ladder whilst [00:07:15] it's in a vertical position, do not place both hands on the same rung. [00:07:20] This gives low stability and can cause injury to yourself or others. [00:07:25] Picking ladders are slightly curved. The curve should be facing towards [00:07:30] you. Do not use a ladder with the curve facing [00:07:35] away from you, position the ladder on strong branches of the tree. [00:07:40] Move the ladder around until it feels secure. Do you not place the ladder [00:07:45] in between trees or on weak branches? If the [00:07:50] soil is raised or mounded along the tree line, do not position the ladder, so [00:07:55] it is on an angle, always position the letter so the rungs [00:08:00] are level to the horizon on mounded planting's platform [00:08:05] ladders should also not be positioned on an angle. Position and [00:08:10] platform ladders straight onto the tree. [00:08:13] Be careful of not [00:08:15] dragging irrigation lines when moving the letter around trees. If [00:08:20] it is moved, put it back to its place. Always [00:08:25] lift the ladder over irrigation lines, do not climb up ladders [00:08:30] with bags near filled with fruit. It's heavy work and increases the risk [00:08:35] of you falling off the ladder. Climb up to the top of the tree with an [00:08:40] empty bag, pick fruit and work your way down the tree filling the bag. [00:08:45] Do not stand on one side of the ladder and do not lean over too [00:08:50] far place feet evenly on the centerline of the ladder. Only [00:08:55] pick fruit within a safe reach. Do not pick on bins or any other [00:09:00] elevated objects. There should always be three points of contact [00:09:05] with the letter one hand and two feet. As [00:09:10] a guide, the hips should be lower than the top rung of the ladder. Do [00:09:15] not stand at a height where you only have two points of contact [00:09:20] or your hips are higher than the top rung of [00:09:25] the ladder. Do not use letters that are bent. Broken [00:09:30] or cracked. Only use a ladder that [00:09:35] is not damaged if your letter is damaged, reported to the supervisor [00:09:40] and use an undamaged letter. Always [00:09:45] use the toilets provided [00:09:50] by the orchard and always wash your hands with soap [00:09:55] after using the toilet. And use the toilets in the correct [00:10:00] manner. If you see a snake in the orchard, [00:10:05] move away from the snake, alert all other workers around [00:10:10] you contact the supervisor immediately. Do not try [00:10:15] to kill or interfere with the snake.
