New England residents invited to share views on poultry welfare

7 Feb 2018

New England residents are invited to share their views on new measures to improve the welfare of poultry, at a community session next week.

Animal welfare expert and former NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ian Roth will host the session as part of an extensive consultation process on ways to improve animal welfare outcomes in NSW’s poultry industries.

The consultation process coincides with the development of the draft Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry.

“The draft standards cover a range of welfare issues including nutrition, housing, animal husbandry, biosecurity and on-farm management,” Mr Roth said.

“We understand these are issues that affect poultry producers, consumers and the public, which is why we are offering a number of different ways for people to contribute to the process.

“I would encourage anyone with a view on this issue to attend the session and be part of a productive discussion.”

People can also have their say via an online questionnaire or via the NSW DPI consultation website.
