White shark responsible for incident at Shelly Beach

15 Aug 2020

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is assisting Surf Life Saving NSW and NSW Police in responding to a shark attack, at Shelly Beach, Port Macquarie this morning.

A DPI shark biologist has confirmed a juvenile white shark was responsible, based on photographs from the scene.

Surf Life Saving NSW has made the decision to close all beaches in the immediate vicinity of the attack overnight, and will assess the decision again in the morning.

The DPI continues to work with other agencies including NSW Police Marine Area Command and Surf Life Saving NSW, and will provide any further technical advice and resources if required.

All beachgoers are urged to follow safety advice from Surf Life Saving NSW and by visiting the DPI’s website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/sharks and the SharkSmart app.
