Research interests

  • Emerging risks to primary industries including land and water contamination and food safety, animal or plant pests and disease, invasive species including weeds and pest animals, changing social norms, climate change
  • Innovative solutions for waste management that benefit primary industries and the environment, keeping materials cycling in the economy, reducing waste and identifying product redundancy

With a diverse career in the natural sciences, Lis has worked across state and local government, mining and exploration industry, private consultancy and small business. Her experience and interests span earth, environmental and agricultural sciences, invasive species and natural resource management.

As manager of Science Risk in the Chief Scientists Branch, Lis leads programs to identify and manage emerging risks to primary industries. Lis guides research to ensure good science informs decision making, developing and advising on effective strategies to resolve complex issues. Building trusted, collaborative partnerships across government and industry, Lis represents primary industries on a number of state and national committees. Effective, evidenced based and appropriate solutions for primary producers, community and the environment is the goal.

Prior to joining DPI in 2017, Lis was regional project leader for the NSW Weeds Action Program, a role based in local government and responsible for coordinating weed management across the Central Tablelands, Central West and Western NSW. Lis played a key role in transitioning the regions through the NSW weed reforms, including new governance and legislation, and introduction of the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015.

Lis began her career as a geologist with the NSW Geological Survey, moving into scientific editing and geological consultancy before redirecting into conservation and land management.

Lis is based at Orange Head Office.
