Dr Emebiri joined the Industry & Investment NSW in 2009. Before then he was a Senior Research Scientist with the Biosciences Research Division, Department of Primary Industries, Victoria, and based at Horsham, where he conducted pre-breeding research in molecular genetics of barley (malting) and wheat, with the main focus on improving grain yield and quality.
Over the years, Dr Emebiri’s research has elucidated a large part of the genetic basis for complex traits, including grain protein concentration of two-rowed malting barley, and developed an alternative approach to yield improvement, based on manipulation of grain protein genes, which resulted in yields up to 53% over current farming practices, while maintaining protein levels within malting specifications.
Current research activities include gene prospecting of wheat wild relatives and landraces, such as the synthetic hexaploid wheat, understanding the role of heat shock proteins and potential for stabilizing production and quality under heat stress; cereal germplasm development for risk management of climate conditions and rotations.
