Research interests

The application of organic by-product material to soil and the associated impacts on human health and the environment. This includes but is not limited to:

  • The availability, fate and transport of organic and inorganic contaminates and nutrients.
  • Analytical techniques to quantify chemical impacts.
  • Crop and soil responses to differencing application rates.
  • Surface run off and groundwater quality.
  • Microbial activity to evaluate general soil health.


Michael joined the DPI in August 2013. Michael has 5 years experience as an Environmental Consultant in the area of Contaminated Lands. His experience includes the assessment and remediation of a variety of contaminated sites, including, waste facilities, chemical plants and petroleum retail facilities. These projects have provided Michael with experience in a wide range of environmental media including air, vapour, soils, surface water and groundwater.
Prior to entering consultancy Michael completed a Research Masters evaluating the short term risk of nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metal leaching on a  Miscanthus x giganteus (energy/non food crop) crop treated with Biosolids and brewery waste.
