Our climate

The Port Stephens Fisheries Institute (PSFI) is located at Taylors Beach approximately 10 km from Nelson Bay in the Port Stephens Council area (32.724 S, 152.146 E). The Institute is approximately 27 km from north-east Newcastle airport and 150 km north from Sydney.

Our site area is approximately 13 Hectares at relative sea level elevation surrounded by intertidal wetland and mangrove habitat.

Port Stephens weather is mild and very comfortable – the climate is warm year round with no winter frosts, and cool sea breezes keep the temperature mild in the summer. From late May through July the area is an excellent place to watch the thousands of migrating whales pass by.

Average maximum temperatures for the year of 27oC occur around January and February, while the average minimum temperature of 8oC is expected around July. Port Stephens receives on average 1340 mm of rain annually with the most rain for the year observed typically in June and the least in October.
