Damian Collins is based at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) and provides statistical advice and support for researchers at EMAI, Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre and Hawkesbury District Office (Richmond). He joined NSW DPI as a biometrician in 1996, after working at the Australian Bureau of Statistics from 1991-5. He completed a PhD in 2008 on generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) which have important applications in agricultural and biological research. He also provides computational support for other NSW DPI biometricians.

Current projects

Some of the research I am currently involved in includes:

  • fisheries (Cronulla): post-release mortality of fish suffering barotrauma, sightability of sharks and other marine mammals in aerial surveys, catch per unit effort (CPUE) standardisation of game-fish tournament data.
  • biosecurity (EMAI): validation of diagnostic tests (e.g. Johnnes disease), plant disease modelling.
  • soils and recycled organics (Richmond): soil properties on cadmium behaviour, modelling of phosphorus sorption, nitrogen mineralization of waste products.
