Synthetic biology is an emerging field of science which is expected to have major impacts in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and fundamental research. As a part of the international Yeast 2.0 consortium, and in conjunction with the Macquarie University, the NSW Department of Primary Industries is working on constructing part of the world’s first synthetic eukaryotic genome.
The resulting yeast will be a unique research instrument for development of understanding fundamental biological questions on a whole genome scale relating to chromosome structure and function, the roles of mobile genetic elements, as well as serving a useful tool in development of new yeast strains through directed evolution, and novel biosensors.
