Dr Moore provides scientific leadership into NSW DPI’s research and advisory programs on pulse and oilseed diseases in NSW.
Kevin joined NSW Agriculture* in 1966 as a trainee at the University of Sydney (USYD). After obtaining an MScAgr from USYD in 1975, Kevin undertook a PhD at Washington State University, USA. Upon returning to Rydalmere in 1978, he served as Acting Director of Biology for 14 months before transferring to Tamworth Agricultural Institute in 1980 where he initiated research on management of plant diseases in sustainable cropping systems. In 1996 and 1997 Kevin worked at ICARDA, Syria for short periods on faba bean diseases.
A key part of Kevin’s research has been to facilitate its adoption by farmers and others in the grains industry.
Kevin has received several awards including the 2000 NSW Agriculture Staff Award for development of practical strategies for control of diseases of cereals and pulses, the 2001 GRDC Seed of Light Award for excellence in communication in grains industry research and the 2005 Pulse Australia Achievement Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian Pulse Industry.
*NSW Department of Primary Industries was formed on July 1, 2004 through an amalgamation of NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests of NSW and the NSW Department of Mineral Resources.
1. Epidemiology and management of Ascochyta blight in chickpea
-Develop packages to match Ascochyta management to chickpea variety susceptibility
-Develop salvage options for crops in which Ascochyta has established
-Provide scientific advice and pathogen isolates to national and international research efforts on Ascochyta blight; provide pathology support to breeding programs
2. Phytophthora root rot chickpea
-Improve screening method for identify chickpea germplasm with resistance to Phytophthora root rot (PRR)
-Generate PRR in chickpea breeders nurseries and provide pathology support to breeding programs
-Phenotype interspecific progeny for PRR to validate usefulness of molecular markers in chickpea
3. Extension, education and training
-Provide pathology support to the chickpea industry through extension, education and training packages for chickpea growers, agronomists and industry development officers
-Develop and deliver integrated disease management strategies to minimise losses to and reduce risks of the key pulse diseases in the GRDC Northern region
4. Surveillance and biosecurity
-Conduct plant disease surveys to capture data on disease incidence and severity, identify emerging disease issues, validate integrated disease management packages and identify issues with their implementation
