Illustration of African black beetle

This is an illustration of African black beetle Heteronychus arator (Fabricius) (Coleoptera:Scarabaeidae)

Order reference: black-beetle

The familiar small black beetle and the white curlgrub found in backyard lawns is illustrated by Zeck with each stage of the life cycle illustrated in close up, including the damage caused to the base of a grass stem by the chewing of a beetle. The golf-club antennae, typical of all scarab beetles, and the front legs adapted for digging are clearly visible. In the background, Zeck shows that the eggs, larva and pupa are all underground stages with the beetles being the only stage appearing above ground.
