Illustration of Queensland fruit fly

This is an illustration of Queensland fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera:Tephritidae)

Order reference: queensland-fruit-fly

Thankfully, finding a fruit infested with fruit fly larvae is much less common today than it was when Zeck produced this painting. Control of fruit flies, both in orchards and in backyard trees, is much more effective with today’s technology. Many people confuse the much smaller vinegar flies which feed in decaying fruit with true fruit flies which attack fresh fruit. Zeck has provided a portrait of the adult fly here which clearly shows the yellow markings on the back which help to identify the species of fruit flies.
