This species has a very wide host range and is a pest of many plants. Since it first became recognised as a pest of peach, it is this host that Zeck has used for his background to show the twisted and yellowing leaves associated with this insect. Some of the damage is caused by viruses transmitted from plant to plant by the aphid. Zeck had a particular interest in aphids which is evident in the superb detail he has included of these minute insects in the portrait section of the painting.
