The Biotechnology laboratory at NSW DPI Laboratory Services offers a range of DNA extraction and genotyping services to identify inherited conditions in livestock. Testing is conducted Monday to Friday.

Specimen requirements

Blood (with anti-coagulant)
  • 10 ml of blood collected into an EDTA (purple top tube)
  • Submit chilled
  • A DNA extraction surcharge applies for blood samples
Fresh tissue
  • Ear notch samples are preferred. To enquire about suitability of alternative tissue samples contact Customer Service.
  • Only the Afflex© Tissue Sampling Unit (TSU) is accepted without additional charge.
  • Submit chilled
Hair
  • 30-40 tail hairs (including the bulb) from each animal. Submit in paper envelopes.

Other
  • DNA can normally be extracted from most nucleated cells however; a DNA extraction charge may apply for non-routine samples.  To enquire about suitability of alternative sample types (e.g. semen) contact Customer Service.

Additional information

A2 Genotyping

NSW Department of Primary Industries is an accredited and registered A2 Gene Tester for the A2 Corporation Ltd. Your name, contact details and information relating to the A2 testing that is to be carried out, will be disclosed to the A2 Corporation Ltd for the purpose of communicating with you and in order to maintain a register of A2 gene tested animals. Information will be stored and managed in accordance with provisions under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. The supply of your details is voluntary; however, the Department is unable to process your samples if the information is not provided.

International submissions

In addition to the NSW DPI Laboratory Services specimen advice, international submissions must also be accompanied by:

  1. a copy of a valid import permit.
  2. a completed and signed copy of the manufacturer’s declaration.

Both accompanying documents should be affixed to the outside of the package.

Suspect inherited conditions

NSW DPI Laboratory Services can investigate suspect inherited genetic conditions upon request. For such investigations you will be required to:

  • collect property and disease history
  • describe clinic presentation (photos and videos are recommended)
  • obtain pedigree information of affected animal
  • collect two blood (with anti-coagulant; EDTA) samples from affected individual and both parents
  • collect tissue (spleen or liver preferred) for affected animal. Collection vials can be provided by the laboratory with advance notice (i.e. planned euthanasia)
  • collect 30-40 tail hairs from affected animal and both parents.

Courier Services and Specimen Delivery

For NSW submissions, please contact the relevant Customer Service team for courier account details and to order consignment notes.

For submitters outside of NSW, Couriers can be contacted directly to make bookings and arrange collection of packages at the submitters own cost.

Commercial couriers may use either road or air transport and specimens should therefore be packed in accordance with International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements. Most submission sent by veterinarians to the SVDL for testing are defined as “Biological Substance Category B” and must be packed according to the IATA packing instructions 650 (Biological Substance Category B). As requirements for transport can change, customers should consult with their transport agent to obtain current requirements.

Samples may also be hand delivered to the site during normal business hours (8.30am - 4.30pm).
