NSW Animal Welfare Reform - Issues Paper

Protecting the welfare of animals is a priority of the NSW Government.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries has released the NSW Animal Welfare Reform - Issues Paper (PDF, 2MB). This is an important step towards modernising our welfare laws, which is a key commitment in the NSW Animal Welfare Action Plan.

Modernising the animal welfare policy and legislative framework is a large and complex task, and this Issues Paper represents an early step in the process.

The Issues Paper identifies five focus areas for reform:

  1. Reviewing the purpose of the Acts
  2. Defining key terms
  3. Examining compliance powers and tools
  4. Setting the right penalties
  5. Streamlining the framework

NSW DPI welcomes feedback from all members of the community about these focus areas and any other issues you think should be considered in the reform process.

This is your opportunity to help set the direction for animal welfare policy reform. Feedback from the paper will be used in the development of policy solutions.
