NSW Dairy Farm Monitor Project
The NSW Dairy Farm Monitor Project (DFMP) provides profitability and productivity data for a range of farms across New South Wales.
It allows farmers to compare their performance against other farms and identify areas for improvement. DFMP is a joint initiative between the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Dairy Australia.
This project is highly valued by industry and participating (kept anonymous) dairy farmers. Benefits to you as a farmer include:
- An experienced DFMP data collector visiting you to collect your physical and financial information
- Analysis of your farm business performance, presented to you in an individual farm report. Continuous involvement means reports will have historical annual data included.

Insights into the performance of the NSW dairy industry
The “Getting more value out of benchmarking in the NSW dairy industry” project was a 3-month initiative funded by the Farm Business Resilience Project, led by the NSW Department of Primary Industries Dairy Unit. The project utilised the first 10 years of farm data collected from the 78 NSW dairy farms that have participated in Dairy Australia’s national Dairy Farm Monitor Project since the 2011/12 financial year.
The aim of this project was to explore the data in further detail, beyond that which is reported in the Annual DFMP Report, and specifically explore some physical and financial trends associated with productivity and profitability over the ten-year period. From this investigation, the project has produced key messages, findings and learnings related to dairy farm performance in NSW.

Online tool
This is a web-based tool to visualise the key results of the NSW Dairy Farm Monitor Project. The tool covers each year of the project since the initial 2011/12 financial year. It allows the user to access key historical physical and financial information, filtering and displaying key variables of interest for specific years, regions or farms and also explore trends in the data. The tool can be found here.
Animated video series
Three short animated videos to increase awareness of the importance of farm business analysis and benchmarking have been developed. They highlight the benefits and features of the NSW DFMP. They can be viewed as a series, or as standalone videos.
Farmer opportunity
If reviewing your farm performance and understanding where your business strengths and opportunities lie are a priority for you (and you have good farm physical and financial records) there is potential to enrol more NSW dairy businesses into the program.
