2022Biosecurity attitudinal research

This research is intended to provide a detailed report of current and longitudinal levels of awareness, attitudes, understanding and behaviours in relation to biosecurity among the NSW population (general community, industry and stakeholders as relevant) – identifying drivers of any emergent changes in perceptions and behaviours among cohorts surveyed prior, while also establishing perceptions and behaviours among cohorts not previously surveyed.

In 2022, the study consisted of a large scale statistically valid survey of NSW residents and primary producers, as well as five qualitative case studies covering priority biosecurity focus areas.  Namely: metropolitan, regional and peri-urban areas, aquatic producers, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Biosecurity Attitudinal Research
2019Building Biosecurity for small farms

Small farmers play an important part in keeping Australia’s agricultural industry free from the impacts of pests and diseases.

This guide will help you establish or join a livestock based small farms network in your community and show you the benefits of being a part of one. It provides real life examples from other producers, the latest information on best practice biosecurity and tips on developing your farm biosecurity plan. Having a biosecurity plan for your farm is key to effectively managing the risks of pests, diseases and weeds.

2019Livestock Surveillance Champions in Peri-urban areas - a NSW Case Study

This project explored the efficacy of using producer champions to facilitate producer-based livestock health surveillance and networks to achieve favourable on-farm biosecurity outcomes. Project activities were undertaken in collaboration with existing industry and government animal health surveillance and biosecurity efforts with a focus on changing the biosecurity behaviours of small landholders in such a way that disease surveillance and reporting is improved.

This project was funded by the Department of Agriculture as part of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, the government’s plan for stronger farmers and a stronger economy.

2019Non-English speaking background (NESB) pig production in Greater Sydney

This project explored ways to achieve favourable biosecurity outcomes by focusing on changing the biosecurity behaviours of people in such a way that the risk of disease transmission was decreased.

The main focus was on using NESB community champions to investigate and influence behaviours related to swill feeding within their communities (Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean) in the Greater Sydney area.

This project was funded by the Department of Agriculture as part of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, the government’s plan for stronger farmers and a stronger economy.

2017Greater Sydney Peri urban Biosecurity Social ResearchThe aim of this research project was to gather information to enable DPI and LLS staff and other stakeholders to improve smallholder engagement in biosecurity management in the Greater Sydney peri-urban area.
2016Biosecurity Attitudinal Survey

This program:

  • Measured levels of awareness, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to biosecurity in NSW – providing benchmark measures for future research.
  • Provided insights to assist the development of resources to support implementation of new biosecurity legislation and the NSW Government’s Biosecurity Strategy.

The program comprised qualitative and quantitative primary research.

  • Among the general population 8 focus groups and 1,149 online interviews were conducted.
  • Among primary producers 42 stakeholder consultations, 2 focus groups and 400 telephone interviews were conducted.
