Project 5: Accessing Carbon Markets
Objectives
- Determine industry requirements for carbon market information
- Undertake a desktop review and field studies to identify trade-offs and synergies between existing Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) abatement activities,
agricultural production, resource condition and resilience at farm and regional scales - Develop a framework to identify trends and variables for monitoring environmental co-benefits for cost-effective abatement
activities - Co-design and pilot with industry partners, an industry specific, web-based decision support tool
- Deliver a decision support tool that links primary producers to emerging carbon markets and identifies abatement opportunities
Activities
Review and Industry survey
Assessment of demand and investment opportunities, sector requirement for information (ERF & emerging offset markets), and feasible co-benefit metrics.
Platform design and scope
Assess barriers for adoption of new and existing ERF methods for Primary Industries.
Proof of concept
Pilot web-based decision support tool; use carbon projects to demonstrate and validate monitoring of co-benefits.
Outcomes
Short term
Primary industries better informed and able to identify a value proposition in carbon farming.
Regional and sector specific understanding of carbon market opportunities.
Identification of methods that increase farm profitability and generate carbon credit.
Feasible environmental co-benefits metrics from carbon farming activities aligned to international standards.
Medium term
Primary industries linked to reliable information on viable carbon market options.
Integration of primary industries with emissions reduction and sequestration activities.
Increased opportunities for primary industries to contribute to abatement activities.
Reduced risk of transitioning primary industries to carbon farming and carbon neutrality.
Increased opportunities to access environmental service markets.
Reduced risk of transitioning primary industries to carbon farming and carbon neutrality.
Long term
NSW Primary Industries contribution to achieving reduced emissions optimised while enhancing resilience and supporting sustainable production.
