Description:This workshop is designed for people who need to collect and identify grasses, create a reference herbarium or develop recognition features for local grasses.
Cost:$390 (GST free)
Course aims:To give participants the skills and knowledge to collect and identify grass species anywhere in NSW using botanical keys and to develop a professional quality reference herbarium.
Learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe grass structure
  • Understand scientific naming and relationships between grasses
  • Prepare for plant collecting
  • Use accepted herbarium collection techniques and ethics
  • Note the location, characteristics and occurrence of specimens at the point of collection
  • Describe the habitat in which grasses were growing
  • Clean, preserve, mount and label herbarium specimens
  • Key grasses using Grasses of NSW
Length: 2 days
Course program/structure:
  • Preparing equipment and resources for collecting
  • Methods for collecting and handling of grass samples
  • Records, ethics and permits for collecting
  • Understanding grass structures
  • Identifying local grasses using Grasses of NSW
  • Making a professional herbarium
Resources and method of delivery:

Local grasses, plant presses, hand lenses, microscopes and grass keys are used during the course. Course notes and a wide range of digital resources are provided to take home.

This course is delivered using indoor and outdoor instruction.

Accreditation:This course has been mapped to the national unit of competency, AHCPCM502 - Collect and classify plants
