Christmas treat for families in the Hunter

After a difficult few years on the land, primary producers in the Hunter are being treated to an early Christmas present in the form of a relaxing day of fun, food and entertainment for the whole family on Sunday, December 11.

NSW Department of Primary Industries drought support workers at Scone are hoping farm families from near and far will come to the Christmas Farm Family Gathering at the Glenbawn Dam day area for a much needed break.

While the adults enjoy the music provided by Chrissy and Kylie, children will be entertained by ‘Sparkes the Clown’ and Santa will make a surprise visit. There will also be a jumping castle and train rides.

The no-cost day includes lunch, soft drinks and real espresso coffee, as well as a DPI fishing clinic for children interested in learning how to fish. Only 40 fishing places are available, so please book early to reserve your spot.

Drought support worker Tania Chesworth said the idea behind the farm family gathering was to bring families together to share stories and to offer support to those directed or indirectly affected by the extended drought.

‘While primary producers have reason to celebrate of late with good rainfalls recorded in the district, there is still a long way to go before they emerge fully from drought,’ Ms Chesworth said.

‘It could be some years before they recoup their losses and others may never return to full productivity.

‘There are still plenty of dams in the area that are yet to be filled up and underground water is still a major issue in some areas.’

Despite the fact that the region had had its first decent spring in years, follow up rain will be needed to maintain pasture growth.

Ms Chesworth said the effects of drought had been felt beyond the farm gate, with businesses that supply farmers also feeling the pinch.

Part sponsorship for the farm family gathering at Glenbawn Dam has come from the Country Women’s Association, and others in the community are chipping in by providing catering, entertainment and information on the day.

Entry to the park is free and people only have to bring a picnic blanket (and their own alcoholic drinks, if required). Lunch will comprise sausage and steak sandwiches, hotdogs, salads and desserts.

To assist with catering, anyone wishing to attend the Christmas farm family gathering is asked to advise NSW DPI at Scone on 02 6545 1800 of the numbers attending.
