Understanding climate change and agriculture: workshop for local farmers

The NSW Department of Primary Industries’ Wollongbar Agricultural Institute has organised a one day workshop on climate change in response to farmers’ concerns.

“We expect strong interest in this workshop because many farmers are already wondering what impact climate change will have on their farms and their industry,” workshop organiser and DPI Agricultural Resource Officer, Richard Swinton, said today.

“The workshop has been designed to give farmers an understanding of the causes of climate change, the possible impacts on plants and animals, and what farmers can do to manage these impacts.”

Speakers include Queensland climate scientists Holger Meinke, Zvi Hochman and Steve Crimp.

“NSW DPI Wollongbar Research Agronomist Katrina Sinclair will report on north coast weather trends and their impact on the dairy industry.” Mr Swinton said.

“As well, representatives of the main agricultural industries on the north coast will report on how climate change could affect their industries in the future.

“We believe the workshop will be useful to north coast farmers, agricultural advisors, and rural service providers.”

Mr Swinton said there will be strong demand for the workshop so early bookings are essential.

The workshop, The impacts of climate change on north coast agriculture, will be held at Goonellabah RSL Sporting Club at 9.30am, 27 October. There will be a $20 charge.
