Nearly 450 sheep producers owed money under the old OJD industry assistance scheme will receive an initial payment this Christmas.
Advance payments totalling $725,000 are being made this week and will be welcome news for producers who took proactive steps to control the spread of Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD).
Under a previous industry program, nearly 450 sheep producers carried out work in good faith to control OJD as part of a nationally coordinated approach to fight the disease.
Producers expected to be repaid for those works through the industry’s ‘voluntary-compulsory’ contribution program which left many producers out-of-pocket.
Earlier this year a new OJD transaction-based contribution scheme that would provide a more equitable means of raising funds for the OJD program was announced.
