Spearfishing banned in Shelley Beach lagoon

Spearfishing has been banned in Shelley Beach lagoon after community concerns were raised for swimmer safety.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Director, Fisheries Management, Nick Rayns, said the ban was introduced after the community raised safety concerns about spearfishers in the lagoon.

"Shelley Beach lagoon is a popular swimming and snorkelling spot for families, residents and tourists, and is also used by schools to teach students about marine life" said Dr Rayns.

"Representatives from the local community approached the department requesting a ban on spearing in the lagoon.

"The community was concerned that young, inexperienced spearfishers were spearing in the lagoon, in close proximity to swimmers."

The Hastings Council, peak recreational fishing bodies, and local spearfishing representatives supported the closure to ensure swimmer safety.

Anyone found spearing in the lagoon is liable for an on-the-spot fine of $500, or could face penalties of up to $11,000 in court.

"The ban came into force in June this year, and now signs have been erected at the lagoon to notify people that the area is closed to spearfishing," said Dr Rayns.

Anyone with information on illegal fishing activity is urged to contact their local Fisheries Office or call the Fishers Watch phone line on 1800 043 536.
