Free fishing guides released for summer

Anglers should remember to pack the latest fishing guides along with their bait and tackle when they go fishing this summer.

The 2004-2005 Fishing Guides for freshwater and saltwater angling have just been released by the NSW Department of Primary Industries in time for the State's peak recreational angling season.

The free fishing guides contain essential information for more than 1 million anglers around the State - young and old. They contain just what families and holiday anglers need to know to enjoy a great day's fishing. The fishing guides include information on:

  • Bag and size limits;
  • Fishing tips and safety advice;
  • How to identify fish species;
  • An outline of the many programs funded by the recreational fishing licence;
  • Fishing licences;
  • Recreational fishing havens;
  • Native and pest species and trout waters (for freshwater anglers);
  • Other protected areas such as aquatic reserves, Marine Parks; and
  • Rock fishing safety.

The fishing guides are a key part of the Department's commitment to helping the community and anglers take care of our aquatic environment for future generations.

Anglers spent a total of $550 million on fishing-related items in 2000/01, including bait and tackle and boat hire.

The fishing guides are available from:

  • NSW DPI Fisheries offices;
  • Fishing licence agents such as bait and tackle shops;
  • Fishcare volunteers.
