Abalone thief caught

A 41-year-old man from Gilmore, ACT, will be prosecuted in Eden Local Court, after being caught stealing abalone near Eden.

NSW Department of Primary Industries' (DPI) Manager, Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton, said the man was apprehended as he was driving out of Bittangabee Bay camping area.

"In the car they found 240 live abalone, of which 229 were under legal size. The abalone were later returned to the water.

Fisheries Officers also seized the mans car and dive gear. NSW Waterpolice were also called to attend in relation to other offences.

"Stealing abalone is a serious offence, and offenders can face hefty fines and gaol sentences," said Mr Tritton.

"Recreational fishers are allowed a bag limit of 10 abalone per day. Abalone must be at least 11.5 cm long, and cannot be taken with the aid of SCUBA or hookah gear. There is a complete ban on the taking of abalone between Port Stephens and Jervis Bay."

Anyone with information on illegal fishing activity is urged to contact their local Fisheries Office or call the Fishers Watch phone line on 1800 043 536.
