Burns Point Ferry Ramp fish-feeding Program Opens

A fish-feeding program at the Burns Point Ferry Ramp on the Richmond River was officially opened today.

The program provides a great opportunity for tourists and local school children to learn about fish in their natural environment.

The fish-feeding program was the idea of John Gallagher, ex-chair of the Ballina Fishermen's Co-operative and ferry operator, and has the support of Ballina Council.

The fish feeding has become a valuable tourist attraction, promoting the region's quality fishing opportunities, and an educational experience for local primary and high school children. The area adjoins Richmond River Nature Reserve.

To protect the fish feeding area, a fishing ban applies for a radius of 50 metres around the southern Burns Point ferry approach ramp.

Ballina High School strongly supports the fish feeding program and plans to make it part of the school's marine discovery and resource studies.

The program is also strongly supported by Ballina Fishermen's Co-op, the Ballina Visitor Information Centre and Sustainable Fishing and Tourism Incorporated.
