Easter anglers are reminded they need a NSW recreational fishing licence for all types of fishing activity including netting for prawns, spearfishing and shellfish gathering.
Despite the licence being in place for the past three years, NSW Fisheries officers still encounter anglers who wrongly believe they need a licence only for line fishing.
"This is particularly the case with interstate anglers and those who don't fish often," the Director-General of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said.
"Our officers will be out in force over the Easter long weekend to ensure anglers are licensed and following the rules.
"Anglers should ensure they know the specific rules for activities such as prawn netting, spearfishing, gathering shellfish and using hoop nets and lobster traps.
"All fishing rules are listed on the website www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au and are included in fishing guides available free from NSW Fisheries offices and bait and tackle stores."
Mr Dunn said several special Easter operations will target areas including the Central Coast, south-west NSW and the Darling River in the State's far west.
"Easter is always a popular time for fishing, and good angling opportunities are expected in several areas of the State this holiday weekend. Recent rain in inland NSW has improved conditions in areas such as the Darling River."
Mr Dunn also urged anglers to buy their licences as early as possible to avoid the last-minute rush that often occurs at licence agents on holiday weekends. Anglers also should ensure they carry their licences with them when fishing.
Licences can be bought from more than 1100 outlets, including major bait and tackle shops, NSW Fisheries offices, more than 50 Kmart stores, selected Shell service stations, over the phone on 1300 369 365 or on the internet at www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au.
"People found without a recreational fishing licence can be issued with on the spot penalties of $200."
