Ebor fishing school for youngsters

A learn to fish workshop at the Dutton Trout Hatchery near Ebor recently has proved so popular it will be repeated early in November.

The Recreational Fishing Trust and Department of Primary Industries will stage the workshop at the Dutton Trout Hatchery at Ebor on Saturday 5 November.

Fishers aged 8 to 14 years from the Mid North Coast and New England areas will have the chance to learn sustainable fishing techniques, bag and size limits, and ethical fishing practices, as well as casting, knots and rigs.

‘They’ll also learn about aquatic habitats and threatened species,’ said Northern Region Fisheries Education Officer, Mark Asquith.

Mr Asquith said fishing workshops were run around the state as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teach children about recreational fishing and conservation.

‘The morning will be devoted to learning about fish and fishing,’ Mr Asquith said.

‘During the afternoon session youngsters will put their new skills into action by fishing for trout in a pond at the hatchery, and they’ll be able to compete for prizes.

‘Each child will receive their own fishing gear including rod and reel, hooks, swivels and lures; and a cap and shirt, to take home.

‘Perhaps one of the most important and inspiring features of these fishing workshops for the participants is the opportunity for them to learn of, and share in, the wealth of knowledge and skill gained by the Fishcare Volunteers and New England Trout Acclimatisation Society members over many years.’

The fishing workshop will be held at the Dutton Trout Hatchery, Point Lookout, Ebor, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, 5 November 2005.

The cost is $40 a child, including a barbecue lunch.
