Outback Carp Muster returns to Brewarrina and Bourke

Anglers will get an opportunity to learn more about the environmental problems caused by carp, plus win some great prizes by helping remove the pest fish from the Darling River, when the ‘Outback Carp Muster’ returns to Brewarrina and Bourke in October.

This is the third Outback Carp Muster and it will be held at Brewarrina on the weekend of 4-5 October and at Bourke on the weekend of 11-12 October.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Conservation Manager, David Cordina, said more than 230 people attended the first two musters in November last year and this year’s musters aimed to attract even more people.

"Thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be on offer for category winners, including the biggest carp caught, the most number of carp caught and mystery prizes in both senior and junior prize categories," he said.

Mr Cordina said carp were a major pest in the Barwon and Darling Rivers and were now widespread in the area, making up more than 90 per cent of all fish in Murray-Darling Basin rivers.

"They are a major threat to the future of the Basin’s native fish stocks including Murray cod, golden perch, freshwater catfish and threatened species such as silver perch and the western populations of the olive perchlet and purple-spotted gudgeon.

"Carp musters provide an opportunity to raise community awareness about the need to manage carp populations.

"They are also a great opportunity to showcase other on-ground works being done as part of the Brewarrina to Bourke demonstration reach project funded by the Western Catchment Management Authority.

"What better way to inform the recreational fishing community of the impact this pest species has on the local aquatic environment and native fish populations, than with a fun competition with great prizes," he said.

The Outback Carp Muster is open to all people - expert anglers and beginners alike. Only legal fishing methods can be used and the more carp anglers catch the better their chances are of taking home a prize.

Brewarrina registrations will be at Dowles Service Station and Brewarrina Newsagency. Bourke registrations will be at Franks BP and the Northy Hotel.
