Thefts force forest road closure

Part of Sherwood Road in Conglomerate State Forest north west of Coffs Harbour will be closed overnight and at weekends in an effort to prevent fuel theft and vandalism.

“It is a shame that the anti-social behaviour of a few people has led us to this decision,” said Forestry Corporation North East Region harvesting forester Murray Harrison.

“These thefts have been going on for some weeks.

“We have erected steel gates and used padlocks in an attempt to protect harvesting machinery, but thieves have still broken in.

“We have no choice but to close the road with locked gates until this harvesting operation is finished.”

Sherwood Road is a popular link between Woolgoolga and Glenreagh, but there are alternative routes.

The road closures are at the intersection of Plum Pudding Road and Sherwood Road to the east, and Waihou Road and Sherwood Road to the west.

Mr Harrison said that people entering the closed area without permission would be liable to fines of up to $2200.

Notices will be erected on roads leading to the closed area advising of alternative routes.
