An ongoing study of the leafhopper subfamily Deltocephalinae in Australia identified a single species from North Queensland as belonging to a genus not represented elsewhere in Australia. A paper by M.J. Fletcher on the Australian fauna of the subfamily to an international congress in Cardiff, Wales in 1999 included reference to this new genus. Dr W.J. Knight, former head of Hemiptera section at the Natural History Museum in London, recognised the genus as one which he had also recognised from numerous specimens from New Guinea and neighbouring islands held by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. This paper describes that new genus Melanetettix and 22 new species, only one of which is present in Australia. That species was named Melanetettix semeraroae after Linda Semeraro who created the illustrations for the paper. Images of the species can be found at http://www1.dpi.nsw.gov.au/keys/leafhop/species/msemerar.htm
