Our research

Delivering resource populations for multi-breed genomic evaluation in beef cattle (Supergenomics), this project brings together a broad consortium of state governments, industry and universities and will enable delivery of highly accurate genomic breeding values for the breeds and composites used in the Northern and Southern beef industries. These resource populations will consist of multiple breeds, and composites, enabling genomic evaluations that work regardless of breed composition of the animal. In addition, a multibreed resource population will provide the head-to-head comparisons required to underpin the development of multi-breed Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) by BREEDPLAN. As part of this project, Tocal has three beef cattle breeds, Charolais, Shorthorn and Angus managing 100 breeders from each breed.

The National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program is a collaboration between beekeeping and horticulture industries, University of Sydney, University of New England and non-profit the Wheen Bee Foundation. DPI is responsible for establishing a reference population for selection of economically important honey bee traits to the Australian environment, completing an economic evaluation for the breeding program, developing guidelines for practical standardised trait selection, generating production, pollination and health trait data, developing and delivering extension tools and accredited training to beekeeping and horticulture industries, and disseminating artificially inseminated breeder queens to Australian queen producers.
