As a part of the NSW Shark Management Strategy, NSW DPI committed to trial two eco-friendly shark barriers on the North Coast. These barriers were to provide an enclosed shark-free area for each-goers.
DPI worked with over 20 groups and organisations including Ballina Shire Council, Surf Lifesaving and local businesses to determine the best locations to trial the shark barriers.
A barrier was earmarked to be installed adjacent to Lennox Head - Alstonville SLS Club at Lennox
The Aquarius Barrier trial was discontinued after it was unable to be effectively and safely installed. Materials continue to be removed from the beach.
DPI will continue to work closely with the Ballina Shire Council to explore complementary shark mitigation technologies included in the Strategy and suited to local conditions.
A second barrier trial was to be conducted at Lighthouse Beach, Ballina however this trial was discontinued after contractor Eco Shark Barrier Pty Ltd identified significant installation and maintenance issues.
All construction materials have been removed from Lighthouse beach.
