Current projects on Eastern Freshwater Cod

Eastern Freshwater Cod fingerlings return to the Richmond River catchment for the first time in 20 years!

DPI Fisheries has continued and expanded its conservation stocking program for the endangered Eastern Freshwater Cod based at Grafton Fisheries Centre with over 8,200 fingerlings released in December 2022.

A total of 3,000 Eastern Freshwater Cod fingerlings were stocked into the Wilsons River in the Richmond River catchment for the first time in over 20 years! Big thanks to the OzFish representatives that supported us on this project and the local landowners that partnered with us.

A further 5,200 fingerlings were released into the Orara River in the Clarence River catchment to add to the 6,500 fish stocked at this site in December 2021.

The team at Grafton Fisheries Centre have worked hard to breed these fish and several other threatened species since broodstock were rescued and relocated in the summer of 2019-20.

The conservation stocking in both the Clarence and Richmond Rivers aims to help the local Eastern Freshwater Cod populations recover and rebuild from the impacts of recent drought, bushfires and floods.
